Trail Life Episode 2 – Wild Men on the Mountain
I wanted to try fastpacking at all costs and an overnight Earth Hour mission for my birthday seemed like the perfect time to do it. After a few calls, I found a crazy enough buddy to join me – Mubeen 🙂
Besides the kit requirements (shoes, sleeping bag, stove, food, etc.) its a pretty inexpensive adventure. All we had to do was pay the MCSA hut fees for their Table Mountain hut (which was less than R100) and that was all.
Just a few of my favourite pieces of gear to accompany me on an #EarthHourZA overnight mission on Table Mountain with @mubeenseptember #leavethecouch #mountainmissions #microadventure #TimeToPlay #wohza #stancesockssa #FlatIsBoring #UDHydrates #FirstAscent #Oros #SupposedToBeFastAndLightButDidntReadTheMemo #ToeAction
We started hiking late on the Saturday afternoon from the Theresa Avenue parking area in Camps Bay with the aim of getting to the hut by sunset. A slight time miscalculation (or maybe it was all the photo breaks we took on the way up) and it was dark by the time we arrived. Atop Table Mountain, the night was warm and still. I figured “Why waste this perfect night by staying indoors? Let’s wild camp at Tranquility Cracks!” – and so we did 🙂
After an awesome night sleeping under the stars, we headed back to the hut to drop off our kit and then went on a run from the hut to Maclear’s Beacon and back via Smuts Track – if only every day could start like this
After hogging all the fun, it was time to call it quits and head down Kasteelspoort to the car to rejoin civilisation.
Definitely one of the coolest birthday’s EVER!!!
