Best Trail Shoe of 2018: Salomon Sense Pro 3
My favourite trail running shoe is back! It’s the Salomon Sense Pro 3 🙂
So if you recall, I did a review of the Sense Pro 2 and loved it. Salomon have reincarnated my beloved Sense Pro and added some solid upgrades in certain areas.
It makes me happy inside when a brand keeps the DNA of what people love in their favourite shoe the same through each new version. But what makes me even happier is when they make additional upgrades to the newer model to make it even better. The mesh upper is definitely tougher than the last iteration. I have well over 140km on this and it’s been through rivers, mud, some pretty hard core terrain and after a wipe down it still looks good.
So for my foot shape, Salomon just works. The Sense Pro 3 is a stiffer shoe and is narrow. I generally take a half size up in Salomon shoes. But the classic combo of the sensifit and endofit is probably one of the major reasons Salomon dominates the market. The responsiveness you get from this combo is fantastic and it makes the Sense Pro 3 at home on any terrain and at any distance.
Talking about distance, the midsole provides amazing cushioning and is solid. It’s a 4mm drop compared to the Sense Pro 2 which came in at 6mm – if that sort of thing matters to you.
The outsole is where the biggest noticeable difference is between the Sense Pro 3 and the older Sense Pro 2. The lug pattern and style is completely different. They are now bigger and more aggressive. It’s definitely improved the wear on the shoe – which was my main concern from the last model.
Here are my thoughts about the Salomon Sense Pro 3:
- Durable upper that has shown no signs of wear even after running through some really tough environments
- Still that great Salomon midfoot fit that remains responsive, fast and tight
- Outsole that allows the runner to take on all types of terrain with confidence
WHAT NEEDS WORK
- Nothing really… this shoe is phenomenal
Everything is on point in this shoe. I can’t sing it’s praises any more and I’ve been recommending it to everyone. If you’re not sure what trail shoe to get, go get this one. As a reviewer, I tend to look for the negative and criticize, but on the Sense Pro 3 I just can’t find a fault.
Only things that you should be concerned about is if it is too narrow for your foot shape. So please go try these on.
But it’s damn near close to perfect! A shoe for training and racing. For long and short. For muddy and rocky. The Sense Pro 3 is the shit! And the price is not bad at R2400 – that’s right…it’s cheaper than what the Sense Pro 2 costed at release.
