Trail Life Episode 1 – Lion’s Head Loop (aka Pat’s Tracks)

Welcome to the first episode of Trail Life our new trail vlog!

If you didn’t think we were mountain and trail obsessed, think again 🙂

We’ve decided to share our adventures in a vlog style as we head into the mountains. From our favourite trail running routes, to just heading out and getting lost, to some more extreme scrambling missions. The Trail Life series aims to inspire others to get out and explore the mountains and show you some moments in time as we’re out there.

In this episode, Fareed and Malikah show you around one of their favourite trails in Cape Town – the Lion’s Head Loop aka Pat’s Tracks. It’s usually the type of trail that you squeeze in after a long day at work to re-energize the mind (and body) with a quick 5km run.

We totally recommend that you tackle it around sunset for some amazing views and (if you time your run just right) you’ll see the sun setting over the Atlantic Ocean as you round the corner closest to the Glen – definitely not to be missed!

Have you run the Lion’s Head Loop before? Tell us what your favourite segment is in the comments section below.

– Peace

The Lions Head loop is the perfect blend of free-flowing but also some technical sections.
I love doing the clockwise loop (most technical parts uphill) and my favourite section is from the top of The Glen down all the way to Clifton’s side!

My favourite trail as well. So close to the city. And with diverse terrain within just few km. It is technical in some sections, it is uphill, there are fast sections, it is downhill. Almost all in one.

Malikah is a machine! She isn’t even warmed up after 5kms. Too short for her

This is so cool to read! I just got into running recently. After speaking to my Mother (who is from Cape Town, I grew up in England) about my new passion for running, she told me about her Uncle, Patrick O’Brien. He was an avid runner and used to compete in Cape Town. She told me there was a route he used to run regularly, that became known as Pat’s track amongst his running friends – back in the 80’s. I thought I’d google it and see if any results came up and it looks like it’s a well established route now! Hoping to visit Cape Town again in the near distant future and try out his route 🙂
